A new review, published online in the Journal of Internal Medicine, suggests that micronutrient supplementation, especially a combination of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), zinc, copper, selenium, and iron, might help improve myocardial function in patients with heart failure (HF) through improvement in mitochondrial function.

The authors stated that low plasma levels of several micronutrients, including vitamin D, selenium, zinc, and iron, are tied to adverse outcomes in HF. While there is no larger randomized controlled trial of selenium supplementation in HF patients, one trial in older people suggested that it reduced cardiovascular mortality when used in combination with CoQ10. There is some evidence to support the role of a combination of zinc and selenium in improving left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and multi-micronutrient supplements (including zinc) in increasing LVEF and left ventricular end-diastolic volume. One trial looked at the role of copper supplementation in people with ischemic heart disease; however, the results have not been published. CoQ10 supplementation in HF patients has been shown to increase symptom relief, exercise capacity, duration, peak oxygen consumption, and has been linked with better quality of life and reduction in major adverse cardiac events… (Medscape)
